IST’s Entrepreneurship Lab (e-Lab) aims to provide the foundations for entrepreneurial activities among IST’s scientific and administrative staff. All areas relevant for establishing and running a tech company are addressed, ranging from the protection of your idea/invention over the creation of a business plan, sales and marketing, to financial and regulatory topics.

Course Objectives
Participants shall
• acquire a solid overview on what it means to found a technology company.
• become aware of common pitfalls, do’s and don’ts concerning intellectual property, company registration, sales and marketing, and entrepreneurial financing.
• become able to properly draft a business model and write a business plan.
• become able to successfully apply for public grants and approach investors and incubators to secure funding for their business.
• Be motivated to pursue their own technology development projects and get in touch with the TTO/TWIST for further counselling and translational project funding (TWIST Fellowships).

Target group: This course is open to the IST community; participants are encouraged to connect their participation to the development of their own research work or future technology development, but we also welcome participants who are just curious about entrepreneurship in general.
Both scientific staff and administrative staff are invited to participate.

Prerequisites: No previous knowledge of business administration and finance is required. The sessions will be of introductory nature and students are not required to be familiar with accounting and finance concepts.

Evaluation: Discussions, presentations and complementary online courses.
For an issuance of a certificate, attendance for at least 8 of the 10 sessions is mandatory.

Teaching format: IST’s e-Learning platform (Moodle) will be used.

Coursework: An integral part of the e-Lab is an active discussion and the possibility to work on one’s own business idea to gather feedback from peers. It is envisioned that there will be short case studies as group work assignments, where participants are asked to present and discuss their solutions.

Complementary online courses: depending on the development of these third-party course offerings, the eLab might be complemented by two external online courses:

• The p2i (postdocs to innovators) programme by Cambridge and the p2i network (https://www.p2i-network.eu/)
• The Entrepreneurship strategy online course by HEC Paris on Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/learn/entrepreneurship-strategy )

Participation in these complementary courses is not mandatory, but encouraged. Questions arising from these courses will be addressed during the Q&A parts of the eLab lectures.

Mentoring: It is envisaged that students who are pursuing a TWIST fellowship or other means to translate an idea into a concrete business, will receive individual mentoring after completing the introductory parts of the course.
