If the word “math” in the title scared you off a bit, this course is for you. It aims to refresh and build a little on basic mathematical knowledge of non-mathematicians, and explain the intuition behind mathematical concepts that are often encountered in any research field. We design the course so that it is easy to understand for anyone with no more than high-school level mathematics, emphasizing the general concepts rather than technical details, and providing hands-on exercises for you to check whether you understood them.

It will run in the form of weekly modules, each focused on a different field, taught by friendly students and postdocs who use this field in their research. The topics range from derivatives, integrals and differential equations to linear algebra and statistics. After the course, frequently encountered mysterious terms like eigenvalues or null hypothesis will be much more meaningful. The goal is to get familiarized with the terminology and concepts so that if you ever need to understand a mathematically involved part of a paper, you will know what to ask your colleagues about.

Target group: Students with little to no experience with mathematics beyond the high school and also those who would like to refresh their knowledge.
