8) Margaret – Live ex vivo imaging of acute cortical brain slice and retina 9) Kohgaku* – Membrane capacitance measurement to monitor synaptic vesicle exo/endocytosis 10) Yoav – Online tools for the fumbling experimental neuroscientist 11) Ben* – Synaptic circuit-mapping with subcellular resolution by optogenetic laser-scanning photostimulation

Target group: All graduate students are welcome. First year students with no or minimal prior experience in neuroscience should attend and participate in the first two lectures (intro and first technique), and then discuss further attendance with the course lead.

Prerequisites: Fundamentals of neuroscience; ability to read and comprehend recent publications.

Evaluation: Attendance, participation and two small writing assignments. Students must deeply read an article provided by the lecturer before each lesson. As each lecturer presents only once, students are expected and highly encouraged to attend all sessions. In case of expected absence, one of the course organizers should be notified in advance. During Zoom sessions, in order to count as present, the camera must remain on and students may not engage in other activities (for example, no experiments). Participation: in every session, we expect all students to ask questions without prompting, and to attempt answers to questions by others when possible. Assignments: after the first 6 lectures, students must turn in a 1-page mock project proposal making use of 2 techniques already presented; a second proposal is similarly due after all lectures are completed.

Teaching format: A. Zoom version (as in 2020): video presentation with Q&A and discussions strongly encouraged B. In-person lecture followed by lab demonstrations (split into groups of <=5 students)

Choice of mode A or B depends on Corona guidelines, vaccination status, and so on. The mode could even switch from A to B partway through the course; we are flexible.
