This course is designed with three goals: (1) to review basic concepts in statistical mechanics, (2) to derive important statistical physics problems relevant to soft matter research, and (3) to highlight examples of current research involving statistical mechanics (via papers in the recitation section).

Target group: Physics students interested in soft matter. Physics students interested in a refresher of the basic concepts of statistical physics. General students interested in learning about statistical mechanics for the first time.

Prerequisites: A strong math background (calculus / probability) and basic understanding of physics.

Evaluation: Pass fail based on attendance of lectures / recitation period. Presentation in recitation period.

Teaching format: Whiteboard lectures twice weekly, recitation period once weekly.
