The aim of the course is to give a description of both the differential and the algebro geometrical aspects of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on complex curves. We will start by discussing unitary local systems on Riemann surfaces and vector bundles on curves. We will cover symplectic, hyperkahler and GIT quotients along the way.

Target group: graduate students interested in the construction of moduli spaces of bundles on Riemann surfaces.

Prerequisites: basic algebraic geometry and differential geometry courses.

Evaluation: presentation on a project related to Higgs bundles
