The Core Components workshop series provides a forum for discussion among Phase I students and supports them in the development of key research and professional skills. Over the course of several workshops throughout Phase I (years 1 and 2), students explore topics such as navigating the PhD at IST Austria, choosing and making effective use of the thesis supervisor and other mentors, writing, and ethics.

Target group: The core components are required for all Phase I students at IST Austria.

Prerequisites: An open mind and a willingness to engage with topics.

Evaluation: Grading is pass/no-pass. Students are expected to attend every workshop, and to actively participate in discussions, activities, and homework assignments. Missing more than 2 class sessions, failing to complete homework assignments, or not participating in class may result in re-taking selected components next year.

Teaching format: A number of multi-part workshops over the course of Phase I led by the instructor and guest lecturers. This is a discussion-based class that includes workshop-style practice; students are expected to come to class prepared to engage with the topics and with each other. Small homework assignments or preparatory reading will be required from time to time.
